In my short experimental film entitled “Pickled Memories: For White’s Only,” I create sculptures using old family photographs, mason jars and corn syrup. I then ask my family to interact or perform with these sculptures—placing them in scenarios that put them in dialogue with our own history and memory. How will they feel about burying these precious objects that represent their loved ones?
My nieces, nephew, sister and I buried the jars in the backyard of my childhood home. The entire time their words were both telling and insightful. “What are you doing? Why are you burying them? No one will ever find them. X marks the spot.”
